David Hutchinson
Appointed CEO of Nexus: 2007
David Hutchinson joined Nexus in 2001 as Executive Director of Indian Oaks Academy, and, in 2007, was promoted to CEO of
Nexus. In this capacity, he reports to the Nexus Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall direction of the organization within
the framework of policies established by the Board. Mr. Hutchinson assesses Nexus’ operational and developmental needs and takes appropriate
action to meet the company’s strategic, operational, and financial objectives.
Darnell Allen
Year Elected to Board: June 2007
Darnell Allen is the Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion for SUPERVALU, Inc., in Eden Prairie, MN, where he directs
diversity and inclusion functions by developing recruiting and retention initiatives and partnering with community organizations. Mr. Allen
provides Nexus with extensive experience in policies and procedure, career counseling, turnover reduction, salary and benefit plans, and
individual development.
Janet Benway
Year Elected to Board: September 1997
Janet Benway, CLU, ChFC, CFP, is a Senior Financial Advisor for American Express Financial Advisors in Wayzata, MN.
Ms. Benway offers financial planning expertise to help Nexus achieve its long-term objectives. Her areas of specialization include risk
protection, tax advisement, retirement planning, estate preservation, investing, small business administration, and asset allocation.
Laureen Carlson, Vice Chairperson
Year Elected to Board: October 2007
Laureen Carlson is President and Founder of Portage Marketing, a marketing and media placement
agency in Minneapolis, MN. Ms. Carlson brings Nexus a wealth of experience in marketing and media planning, as well as
nonprofit professional and volunteer experience. Her background helps Nexus develop its strategic marketing, tactical marketing execution,
media planning and placement, and website development activities.
Lisa Dugan Year Elected to Board: March 2009
Lisa Dugan currently serves as an Illinois State Representative
and is Chair of the Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Committee, Vice-Chair
of the State Government Administration Committee, and is a member of the Agriculture
and Conservation, Elementary and Secondary Education, Health Care Availability and
Accessibility, Medicaid Reform - Family and Children, and Veterans Affairs committees.
She also serves on the House Bipartisan Task Force on Budget Reform and Spending
Reductions and the State Commission on the Elimination of Poverty. Ms. Dugan provides
Nexus with extensive experience in community planning, education initiatives, and
nonprofit fundraising.
Peter Freeman, Chairperson
Year Elected to Board: February 2005
Peter D. Freeman, Ed.D., LICSW, is an Assistant Professor and Director of Alternative Learning Initiatives for the College of
St. Catherine and the University of St. Thomas School of Social Work. Mr. Freeman’s experience as a clinical social work therapist, social-work
educator, organization development consultant/trainer to organizations and leaders, and clinical supervisor of social workers for licensure has
been instrumental in developing cohesive treatment plans throughout the Nexus sites.
Larry Riesselman
Year Elected to Board: March 2001
Larry Riesselman served as Senior Information Systems Director supporting human resources technology for St. Paul Travelers
until his retirement in 2006. He has conducted several office automation studies for nonprofits such as AMICUS and the Frogtown Action Alliance,
and his IT background provides essential support as Nexus utilizes new technologies in its patient care.
Reed Robinson
Year Elected to Board: August 2009
Reed Robinson, NCARB, CID is Principal/Architect, Managing Partner with Winther Johnson Robinson Architects,
specializing in Architecture and Interior Architectural Design. He has broad experience in space utilization planning, building new or
renovation of buildings and human & animal dental and medical clinics. He assists Nexus in optimizing its campus space utilization.
Father Jerry Schik Year Elected to Board:
July 1996 Fr. Jerry Schik offers parish missions and retreats
and provides weekend assistance to parishes in the Onamia, MN, region. As an avid
proponent of restorative justice, Fr. Jerry Schik provides counsel on youth programming
to the Nexus Board of Directors.
Francis Smith Year Elected to Board:
March 2008 Francis Smith currently serves as Chairman of the
Board of HomeStar Financial Group and as Executive Vice President of HomeStar Bank,
a community bank with offices in five Illinois communities, a full-service insurance
agency, a trust company, a title insurance company, and an investment services division.
Mr. Smith provides Nexus with extensive experience in business development and finance.
Jeffrey Talley Year Elected to
Board: June 2007 Jeffrey Talley is currently Vice President
of Employee Resources for Twin Cities Fan Companies, LTD, where he leads Human Resources
and Payroll functions for the 1,000-employee corporation and manages the immediate
and long-term HR needs of the multi-national operation. Mr. Talley offers Nexus
extensive experience in human resource management and planning.
Laurie Zenner, Secretary Year Elected
to Board: March 2001 Laurie Zenner is a partner with Carmichael
Lynch and Spong and has an extensive background in the execution of an integrated
marketing program, the development of strategic plans, and the creation of communications
strategies for major corporations. Ms. Zenner provides Nexus assistance in the creation
of business plans, analysis, product development, and policy and procedural development.
