At the request of the Department of Children and Family Services and the Department of Corrections in Illinois, Nexus opened the first adolescent residential treatment facility for sexual offenders in the state in 1990. The site is located two hours south of Chicago in Onarga, Illinois. Onarga Academy began on a closed seminary and military school campus, and the buildings required a tremendous amount of work just to meet the basic needs of the residents. Through a tremendous effort with the landlords, the Grand Prairie Seminary Board, the main dormitory facilities and parking area were eventually rebuilt.
