Giving up is not an option

Michael struggled to overcome many obstacles because he wanted a better chance at life-and to never victimize anyone ever again

Michael* struggled to overcome many obstacles. Born with his left arm, leg and hand physically impaired, he also suffered serious developmental delays. His largest obstacle, however, was his alcoholic parents who abused and neglected him.

After years of neglect, Michael became part of the circle of abuse. When he was 16, he was referred to out-patient therapy groups for committing a sexual offense. His parents were unsupportive of his therapy and treatment, and would not drive him to his meetings. That didn't stop Michael though. He bought a bicycle. Michael peddled 16 miles round trip, despite his impairment, twice per week to attend out-patient therapy. He wanted a chance at a better life, and to never victimize anyone ever again.

As winter approached, and bicycling was no longer an option, Michael asked his probation officer to place him in a residential treatment program: Mille Lacs Academy.

Michael overcame emotional and physical impairments during his stay at Mille Lacs Academy. He admitted he had sexually abused a daughter of his lifelong family friends. He showed intense grief over this abuse throughout the treatment process and was able to reconcile with his victim and the family to continue their previously strong relationship. And through the academy's recreational programming, Michael learned to rock climb, fish and canoe for the very first time in his life.

After successfully completing his treatment, Michael moved to a foster home where he completed high school. Today, he lives in his own apartment, has a job and attends community college.

"Michael made it because he decided he was responsible for himself and believed he could have a good life," said Mille Lacs Academy Clinical Supervisor Rick Heitke who directly worked with Michael. "He was never afraid to try anything, and he approached his life and his treatment much the same way."

Michael's story is not unlike the many youth who enter Nexus residential treatment programs each year. Perhaps your child, grandson, foster child or client is exhibiting and facing serious problems-addictions, abuse, violent behavior. Multiple paths have led these young people to this pivotal juncture in their lives: bad decisions, peer pressure, an abusive family situation.

Family, school, church, have all tried to help, but lacking the necessary resources and expertise, they often feel overwhelmed and powerless.

Eventually, a child reaches a point where specialized attention must be fully committed to provide structure, discipline and compassion and understanding, all integrated into a safe, secure and supportive environment. That's what saved Michael, and those who could have become his victims-specialized treatment at Mille Lacs Academy.

For us, giving up on these youth is simply not an option. The stakes are just too high, and we know we can help.

Innovative treatment approaches, research-proven techniques and the premise that all children must be treated with dignity and respect have earned Nexus national recognition in treating children and adolescents.
