Onarga Academy staff members, Karen Robertie, Ryan Weiden-benner, Leya Barrett, and Robert Poole, recently collaborated to write a chapter [Chapter 8, A Super Milieu: Using Superheroes in the Residential Treatment of Adolescents with Sexual Behavior Problems] in the book, Using Superheroes in Counseling and Play Therapy by Lawrence C. Rubin.
These treatment trailblazers believe in and practice a variety of treatment techniques to ensure each youth at Onarga Academy has several opportunities to express himself in a fun, safe and non-threatening environment.
"The beauty of this strategy," according to Robertie, "is that we are able to reach the youth through his strengths."
The chapter takes the reader on a journey through several play therapy interventions, along with some very interesting case studies.
The focus is on weaving superheroes throughout a variety of treatment interventions. One example, Superhero Month, takes place during the summer at the academy. Each youth participates in a variety of activities including movies, stories and role playing. The highlight of the month is when each youth creates his own superhero. Each superhero evolves through a sketch, a three-dimensional model and finally, a biography.
